The word ‘indigenous’ means ‘native to the area’. People, animals, and plants can be indigenous, as opposed to having immigrated or been imported from elsewhere. Because of this broad definition that applies equally to animals and plants, many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people object to this term being applied to them.
