ACDE drills down into the data

In March this year ACDE conducted an analysis of the 2016 Census statistics of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander teachers and students.

Some of the interesting numbers that they uncovered are below and for more facts and figures please visit the ACDE website.

  • New South Wales had the highest percentage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students (32.73%), with Queensland second (29.92%).
  • The Northern Territory had the highest percentage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students compared to non-ATSI students (40.12%), with Victoria the lowest percentage (1.60%).
  • The number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island teachers in secondary education in 2016 was 3083, compared to 2058 in 2011.
